Microsoft Azure Active Directory is transitioning to Microsoft Entra ID. This change was announced roughly one year after the inception of the Microsoft Entra product family. The original product range included Microsoft Azure Active Directory, Microsoft Entra Permissions Management, and Microsoft Entra Verified ID. This later expanded to involve Microsoft Entra ID Governance and Microsoft Entra Workload ID. Microsoft Entra now functions to protect every identity, guaranteeing access to resources regardless of their location, and offers a product suite that consolidates multicloud identity and network access solutions.
In an effort to streamline the product naming while bringing together the product suite, Microsoft is opting to rename Azure AD to Microsoft Entra ID. However, all capabilities and licensing plans, sign-in URLs, and APIs remain consistent. Existing deployments, configurations, and integrations will carry on as usual.
With the advent of Microsoft Entra ID, the name change signifies an effort by Microsoft to develop a unified platform that offers comprehensive identity and access management services. Microsoft Entra ID is set to provide a more seamless experience for users across the Microsoft product ecosystem. All previous functionalities, configurations, and integrations of Azure AD will remain unchanged, providing a sense of continuity for existing users. This strategic move by Microsoft is aimed towards providing a more secure and unified platform for its users, emphasizing its commitment towards a user-centric approach. The transition signals an exciting time for Microsoft as they continue their endeavors to evolve the Microsoft Entra product family.
