Microsoft has announced the introduction of Playlists in Microsoft 365, a new feature designed to simplify the creation, curation, and distribution of video and audio files within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.
Previously, users had to build a SharePoint page and load content to create a video collection. With Playlists in Microsoft 365, users can use the 'Playlist' template in Microsoft Lists to add content. Once the right collection of files is compiled, it is instantly ready for playback and sharing.
The new feature leverages the functionalities of Microsoft Lists and Stream to provide an easy-to-use, robust playback experience. The aim is to support the creation and viewability of collections of media files, as illustrated by the example given of session recordings from the European SharePoint Conference 2022 (ESPC22).
Creating a Playlist involves naming and describing it, deciding where it should be saved, and adding media files. This can be done from either the Stream start page or Microsoft Lists. Microsoft has ensured that playlist sharing respects the permissions of the videos in the list.
Upon creation or receipt of a shared playlist, it will become visible under the "Quick Access" section on the Stream start page. Users can also select a Playlist as a favorite, and it will appear under the Favorites filter. Lastly, Microsoft teased about upcoming enhancements such as Playlist support for web parts and notification functionality for additions to subscribed playlists.
This new feature opens up numerous possibilities for improved content organization and access within organizations using Microsoft 365. The integrations of Microsoft Lists and Stream in creating Playlist simplifies the process of managing multimedia files and enhances the playback experience. Leveraging existing permissions, user access to created playlists is also seamless and secure. Future updates on Playlist web parts support and notification functionalities further expand the utility of Playlist, making it an adaptable tool for various organizational needs.
Microsoft 365 introduces a new feature, Playlists, offering a straightforward process for curating video or audio files. This feature is a shift from the previous method where a SharePoint page with web parts was used to build a video collection. Now, a 'Playlist' template is available in Microsoft Lists where users easily add content. Following curation, these files are ready for instant playback and sharing, thanks to Microsoft Stream's trusted value combined with the ease of use of Microsoft Lists.
Creating Playlists is a simple process, either directly from Stream or via List creation within Office or SharePoint. Users can add video and audio files to the playlist for which they have editing access. A Playlist allows authorized individuals to view videos in sequential order, skip back and forth within the playlist, or view other content like podcasts, training videos, product demos, Teams meeting recordings etc.
This feature is a productive tool for creating well-organized content collections be it for the audience of a conference, staff training materials, product demonstrations, or simply for personal use.
