Power BI Direct Lake - What is it and Why it is Important When Working With Fabric With the Microsoft Fabric announcement, There are also additional features in Power BI that makes the connection between Power BI and other Microsoft Fabric objects seamless and more profound. One of these features is the Direct Lake connection in Power BI. In this article and video, we'll talk about the Direct Lake, how it differs from other types of connections in Power BI, and how you can use it in an example.

Microsoft Fabric, an end-to-end Data Analytics platform software-as-a-service, has announced several new features for Power BI to improve its connection with other Microsoft Fabric objects. One of these is the Direct Lake connection, which provides a new method of accessing data and responding to visualization queries in Power BI.

  • The connection types in Power BI include Import Data, DirectQuery, Live Connection, Composite Mode, and now Direct Lake.
  • Direct Lake is different from the other types of connections.
  • Unlike Import Data, which imports data into Power BI from the source.

Direct Lake is different from the other types of connections. Unlike Import Data, which imports data into Power BI from the source, Direct Lake directly queries parquet files stored in OneLake, a data storage component of Microsoft Fabric. This means there's no need for a scheduled refresh of data, and the performance is excellent.

Direct Lake is more efficient than DirectQuery, which sends SQL code to the data source to get data. Direct Lake doesn't require sending SQL queries, making it faster and more efficient.
The introduction of Direct Lake in Power BI makes use of Lakehouse, an object in Microsoft Fabric that stores structured and unstructured data. The default Power BI dataset associated with Lakehouse allows for the creation of relationships between objects and other modeling changes.

Exploring Direct Lake Connection in Power BI

The Direct Lake connection offers benefits to Power BI users in terms of efficiency, real-time data access, and compatibility with other Microsoft Fabric objects. It enables users to quickly and effectively visualize and analyze data from various sources without the need for importing or duplicating the data within Power BI. By providing seamless integration with Microsoft Fabric, users can leverage their existing tools and platforms to get even more value from their data and enhance their decision-making capabilities.

Learn about Power BI Direct Lake - What is it and Why it is Important When Working With Fabric

Power BI Direct Lake is an important feature when working with Microsoft Fabric. It allows for a seamless connection between Power BI and other Microsoft Fabric objects. Direct Lake is a new connection type that provides a method of accessing data and responding to visualization queries in Power BI. It differs from other types of connections, such as Import Data and DirectQuery, by providing a direct connection to the source of the data, rather than importing it into Power BI. This allows for faster and more efficient data access, as well as more accurate visualizations. Direct Lake also provides additional features, such as the ability to write custom queries and use advanced analytics. This allows users to access more detailed insights when working with their data. With Direct Lake, Power BI users can quickly and easily access the data they need to make informed decisions.
