Microsoft Fabric, an end-to-end Saas cloud-based analytics platform, has many workloads and objects. One of the Objects is called Data Warehouse,

What is Microsoft Fabric Data Warehouse ?

Microsoft Fabric Data Warehouse is a high-performance database system that supports storing and analyzing large volumes of structured data in

OneLake. It interacts with SQL commands and features a robust computing engine for fast data operations.

Data Warehouse and Lakehouse are different, with the former supporting only structured data and providing SQL commands for both read and write operations. Conversely, Lakehouse handles both structured and unstructured data but allows SQL commands only for reading data.
To use Microsoft Fabric Data Warehouse, one must enable Fabric and then navigate to the Data Warehousing workload of Microsoft Fabric. Once there, the user can create a new Warehouse, with Azure Synapse being the component powering this workload. Data can be loaded into the

Warehouse via Data Pipelines, Dataflows (Gen 2), or SQL commands.
Data from the Warehouse can be read through multiple methods, including SQL queries, Visual query (Power Query Editor online), or Power BI Get Data. The Warehouse also generates its own Power BI Dataset, which can be modified using the Warehouse Explorer in the Model tab.
The Warehouse, Lakehouse, and Power BI Datamarts share similarities, but they also have differences that will be discussed in a separate article.

What is Microsoft Fabric Data Warehouse?

"An Introduction to Microsoft Fabric" explores Microsoft's latest comprehensive and integrated analytics platform that spans data ingestion to Business Intelligence and actionable insights. Microsoft Fabric is developed to address common issues faced by organizations, such as complex architectures, fragmented data, multiple product management, security management, and complex cost management.

The platform aims to offer a one-stop-shop solution with a unified architecture, a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offering where Microsoft takes care of everything from application to networking. Microsoft Fabric introduces features for efficient collaboration, reduces the need for data replication, simplifies the pricing model, and promotes a low-code/no-code experience. It embraces open-source file formats like Parquet and Delta Lake and simplifies the analytics architecture to provide timely insights.

Microsoft Fabric brings together a diverse range of features including Data Engineering, Data Factory, Data Science, Data Warehouse, Real-Time Analytics, and Power BI, all functioning within a single, user-friendly platform. These components provide extensive capabilities for large-scale data transformations, data linkage, machine learning model building, SQL performance, real-time data analysis, and intuitive business intelligence, respectively.

The platform's primary goal is to provide fast and efficient end-to-end analytics. The advantages of Microsoft Fabric include a low-code platform, versatility in handling data of various volumes and formats, efficiency in data duplication, and integration with multiple data services without having to copy data multiple times.

Microsoft Fabric's key features are its Complete Analytics Platform, OneLake (SaaS Lake-Centric and Open Architecture), the empowerment of every business user through Microsoft products, and AI Power. It aims to provide a unified analytics fabric that enhances workflows, adopts a lakehouse architecture, ensures pervasive security and governance, and is optimised for various roles/personas within the organization.
