Explore Microsoft Purviews Public Preview - experience automated data discovery and sensitive data classification via Dataverse integration!

Now in Public Preview: Microsoft Purview integration with Microsoft Dataverse is announced. Previously, this feature was in private preview, allowing organizations to automate data discovery and classification within their Dataverse environments. This capability is essential for comprehensive data governance across Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Microsoft Power Platform applications.

With the public preview launch, organizations can now scan Dataverse environments and add to their Microsoft Purview Data Map. However, this integration is currently tailored only for the enterprise version of Microsoft Purview. Companies can start taking steps to integrate their systems and further control their data landscapes.

  • Data classification
Automatic data classification is supported with the integration that you can classify Dataverse data assets by scanning your Dataverse environment. This will help you to better understand and govern your data by implementing measures to protect sensitive or important data from unauthorized access to the business application data estate. You can directly leverage 200+ built-in system classifications to easily identify sensitive information from your Dataverse tables, and also you can create custom classifications to classify data based on your organization needs.

  • Discover and manage data assets
After the scan is completed, enterprises can begin to explore Dataverse data assets in Microsoft's Data Catalog and govern the data with the wide array of capabilities provided by Microsoft.

In Microsoft Purview Data Map, you will find a new source type named "Dataverse" where you can register your specific Dataverse environment. Data source administrators are empowered to set up and configure scans for individual Dataverse environments. This addition aims to simplify registering and scanning processes for enhanced data management.

For authentication during the scanning process, two methods are supported: System-assigned managed identity (SAMI) and service principal. SAMI is linked directly with your Microsoft Purview account, created automatically, and managed by Azure. The service principal acts like a user or group and can be granted permissions.

Scans within Dataverse can be tailored, allowing administrators to select specific Dataverse table assets either manually or by name pattern matching. This filtering capability allows for more focused and efficient scans, targeting only the data necessary for governance needs.

Automatic data classification through the Microsoft Purview integration will enable the categorization of data within Dataverse. Businesses can employ over 200 built-in system classifications to pinpoint sensitive information, as well as create custom classifications to meet their organizational requirements.

Once scanning is complete, users may explore their Dataverse data assets in the Microsoft Purview Data Catalog and utilize the suite of governance tools offered. This allows for a rich management experience of the data assets, ensuring they are well-governed and secured according to company policies.

To begin leveraging these features, businesses can create a Microsoft Purview account. Further information on how to connect to and manage Microsoft Dataverse in Microsoft Purview, as well as information on Azure Purview supported sources, can be accessed through Microsoft's official documentation and resources.
