Learn about Microsoft Fabric Licensing An Ultimate Guide

Microsoft Fabric is a comprehensive data analytics SaaS solution by Microsoft that integrates various aspects of data analytics, including data integration, warehousing, business intelligence, data science, and real-time analytics. The pricing of the platform is based on a Capacity structure, consisting of Tenant, Capacity, and Workspace. Each domain can have multiple tenants, and each tenant can hold one or multiple capacities. A capacity refers to a pool of resources (CPU, Memory, etc.) that are used for Microsoft Fabric services.

The resources in capacities are categorized into different SKUs, ranging from F2 to F2048, with each level indicating the power of the capacity unit (CU). These SKUs have variable costs depending on the level of resources, and they do not require yearly contracts, allowing users to turn them on or off at any time.

However, Microsoft Fabric's storage system, OneLake, is not included in the capacity licensing and is separately charged based on usage. Further, for SKU levels below F64, additional Power BI individual licenses are required for Power BI sharing.
Initially, user-based licensing was used in Power BI and continues to be in use. With Fabric, users need to have free, Pro, or PPU accounts to utilize Fabric objects, depending on the SKU and the specific requirements of their projects. The performance of the system, even at the F2 level, is impressive and cost-effective. In the future, Microsoft plans to announce some yearly licenses which will be more affordable due to their minimum yearly terms.
